Organic Fertilizer

Kelp provides growth hormones, trace minerals and potassium. When applied to wine grapes, studies show that kelp extract increases yield, disease resistance and wine quality. Sulfate of Potash provides a balanced source of potassium and sulfur readily absorbed by plants. Fulvic acid helps usher other nutrients into the plant via a process called chelation, and humic acid provides increased microbial activity in the root zone.

Plants need potassium to develop thicker cell walls and stronger stalks, helping to avoid penetration by fungal spores and insect mouthparts. This helps protect plants from disease and damage, both in the field and after harvest. Potassium also can be absorbed more readily through the leaf cell walls than the other macronutrients, and when combined with the sulfur in the Natural Kelp and Sulfate of Potash, creates an ionically balanced nutrient combination more easily used by plants in both root and foliar applications.

Sulfur is critical to nitrogen fixation and photosynthesis, and in the formation of proteins and oils, so it is important in the development of high nutritional value in legume forages like alfalfa and clover, as well as higher quality and extended shelf-life of fruits and vegetables.

'You Will See a Difference'

What all this means for you is plants that are more vigorous, more tolerant of heat and drought (thicker cell walls) and more nutritious (better protein synthesis).

AGGRAND Natural Kelp and Sulfate of Potash can be mixed with water at a fairly low concentration (1 percent to 2 percent) and be quite effective. Plants can absorb nutrients up to 20 times faster through the leaf cuticle than through the roots, though in significantly smaller quantities; however, it is enough to promote a significant response.

Growers can either apply AGGRAND Natural Kelp and Sulfate of Potash on a calendar basis (every 2 weeks), or on the basis of the plant's stage of development: first true leaves, budbreak, flowering, etc. Just check the AGGRAND Crop Guide or AGGRAND Garden Guide for the specific application. If you aren't sure, apply bi-weekly for fast-growing plants or monthly for perennial crops.

A great method for foliar application of AGGRAND Kelp and Sulfate of Potash is using a hand pump or backpack sprayer. Just mix about 2 ounces Natural Kelp and Sulfate of Potash per gallon of water and soak as much of the leaf surface, top and bottom, as possible with the solution.

Under the USDA program, products are considered biobased if they are composed wholly or significantly of biological ingredients - renewable plant, animal, marine or forestry materials.

Products certified in the program carry a label icon that helps consumers make informed choices. The icon is easy to recognize and consumers can have confidence in the label because claims about the presence and amount of biobased ingredients are third-party certified and strictly monitored by the USDA.

USDA BioPreferred Program Goals
The core goals of the USDA BioPreferred Program first were introduced in the 2002 Farm Bill:

  • To spur the development of the biobased industrial base through value-added agricultural processing and manufacturing in rural communities.
  • To enhance the nation's energy security, by substituting biobased products for fossil energy-based products derived from imported oil and natural gas.
  • To reduce the nation's environmental impact by promoting products that may be more benign to the environment.

This new 100 percent biobased product certification is another benefit of using AGGRAND Natural Fertilizer.

AGGRAND 4-3-3 Increases Hay Yields and Profits

Why should you use AGGRAND Liquid Natural Fertilizer 4-3-3? To improve your bottom line.

John Gore, Bedford, Indiana, saw an increase in the number of bales of hay this past summer that raised his income by nearly $3,000. Gore bales and sells his hay to local farmers.

"Producing large quantities of high quality hay can often be difficult, but I'm convinced that the addition of AGGRAND Liquid Natural Fertilizer 4-3-3 has made it much more profitable," Gore said. Plus the improved plant health, stronger roots, and better drought tolerance when moisture is an issue all add up to a long list of reasons to use more AGGRAND.

In late summer, Gore cut an 11-acre field of alfalfa and grass mixture - a field that in the past has produced 400 to 500 50-pound bales. "I knew It was going to be good but I was thrilled when it made 979 bales," he said.

Although the season brought plenty of rainfall, Gore said past experience convinces him commercial fertilizer couldn't come close to that kind of production.

Gore was especially happy when he did the math on his increased hay yield. He charges $6 per bale.

"After using AGGRAND on just one cutting I produced more than 23,950 pounds more hay," Gore said. "That means I'll earn an extra $2,874. When you figure that the cost of the AGGRAND was much less than the commercial fertilizer which is more than $100 an acre in our area, along with the increased production, it is certainly a winning program."

Gore followed directions from AGGRAND literature that will help his production remain high for next year. "I applied AGGRAND 4-3-3 about 10 days after the last cutting at the rate of one-and-a-half gallons of 4-3-3 in 20 gallons of water per acre using large flood type nozzles," he said.

Gore plans to use AGGRAND on more of his fields next year to continue to increase his yields and his profits.

AGGRAND natural fertilizers not only cost significantly less than chemical fertilizers, they improve soil conditions by providing necessary nutrients that cause organisms and microorganisms to re-establish themselves and greatly increase their numbers, accelerating the natural process that increases fertility, nutrient availability and water holding capacity in the soil.

"I knew it was going to be good but I was thrilled when it made 979 bales...it is certainly a winning program"
- AGGRAND user John Gore

AGGRAND SUCCESS - This Indiana hayfield produced 979 extra bales of hay after John Gore used AGGRAND Liquid Natural Fertilizer 4-3-3 on it. Gore's young son, Jackson, proudly displays a bottle of 4-3-3 as his dad looks on in front of the newly-stacked bales.

Late Soybean Crop Thrives With AGGRAND 4-3-3 Natural Liquid Fertilizer

One Virginia farmer put AGGRAND Natural Fertilizer 4-3-3 to a rigorous test last summer and was amazed by the results.

AGGRAND user Allen Lawrence, Centreville, Virginia, planted 28 acres of soybeans at the end of last July. In a drought.

"There had been no rain in 28 days," Lawrence said.

He wanted to find out the difference between planting with chemical fertilizer and AGGRAND 4-3-3 Natural Fertilizer. The acreage he planted had grass growing in it, he said, but he went ahead and planted the soybeans one inch deep.

"The grass seeded before the soybeans were up," Lawrence said.

He had sprayed the field earlier with AGGRAND 4-3-3, from a 55-gallon barrel he had purchased 2 years earlier. When he saw the grass seeding, he decided to spray a second time, he said. "And the soybeans just popped up," Lawrence said. "I'll be, they came up. If I had used conventional fertilizer, I would have ended up plowing it under. I would have gotten nothing."

All of the conditions - lack of moisture throughout the growing season and planting late - should have kept him from harvesting much of the land, he said.

Typically, Lawrence harvests about 10 to 15 bushels an acre - when his fields are planted on time and there's favorable weather conditions and enough water.

He harvested 368 bushels of soybeans from the 28 acre plot. "There was no way I was supposed to get any beans out of there," he said.

His neighbors were skeptical when he planted the soybeans, Lawrence said. They were amazed when they saw his results. "I told them, 'that's AGGRAND dude, I'm tellin' ya."'

Lawrence said he takes the products for granted because he assumed the AGGRAND 4-3-3 would still be effective two years after it had been purchased.

"I am definitely sold on it," Lawrence said. "I still have about 28 gallons left and I'm planting early this year."

He has talked to several others nearby who typically use conventional fertilizer, and a couple of them plan to use AGGRAND 4-3-3 Natural Fertilizer next spring.

"It's unheard of," Lawrence said. "Nobody goes off conventional fertilizer. They trust it because they've been using it for so long."

His great results with AGGRAND and the increasing costs of conventional fertilizers are factors in their decision, Lawrence said.

"The price of fertilizer has never been this high," he said. "AGGRAND is actually cheaper. They'd save about $10 an acre spraying with AGGRAND."

He plans to plant corn on the same land next season, he said.

"I definitely am looking forward to next year," Lawrence said.

AGGRAND SUCCESS - One Virginia farmer harvested 368 bushels of soybeans from this 28 acre plot during severe drought conditions using AGGRAND 4-3-3 Natural Liquid Fertilizer.

Hay Farmer Projects Greater Yield With AGGRAND Natural Liquid Fertilizer

AGGRAND Liquid Fertilizers Keep Hay Fields Producing

When Jeff and Lynn Tuttle started growing hay on an abandoned hog farm in Oklahoma in 2006, they didn't expect to weather their first season as farmers without rain.

"There has been a major drought the last two summers," Tuttle said. "It rivaled the dust bowl era in Oklahoma. Thanks to AGGRAND liquid fertilizer, the root system on our pastures was able to endure. Many local pastures were badly damaged, or reduced to sand lots."

Despite the conditions, Tuttle had a satisfactory hay yield last year and expects even greater production next growing season.

Tuttle credits AGGRAND Liquid 4-3-3 Natural Fertilizer and AGGRAND Liquid Lime for his success.

"The root system is healthier and more drought resistant," he said. "That's the real benefit of AGGRAND. It's like putting money in the bank."

Using AGGRAND natural organic fertilizers for his crop, Tuttle has improved the pH balance critical for root growth.

"It's like turning the switch when you get the proper pH," Tuttle said. "AGGRAND organic fertilizer is a long term investment in your crops and hay fields. It is easy to apply and will not burn grass or pollute ground water. It promotes root growth by revitalizing the soil, and increases production and drought resistance."

Besides using a good organic fertilizer, such as AGGRAND, patience is vital, Tuttle said.

The farm, on the outskirts of Spiro, Oklahoma, is located in "real country." Tuttle said. People there long have done things a certain way, using chemical fertilizers and chicken manure. "The crops and pastures become more dependent on rain as the soil is stripped of its nutrients," he said.

Using organic fertilizers that replace nutrients in the soil and strengthen the root system of the crop may initially seem to take longer, he said, but actually is an investment in the land.

When Tuttle first began to farm the fields, he had to spray them with an "environmentally friendly" herbicide to knock out the weeds that had overgrown the good Bermuda grass.

Then he applied AGGRAND 4-3-3 Liquid Fertilizer and AGGRAND Liquid Lime together to bring up the pH balance of the soil.

"Weeds started dropping, and the grass was growing strong," Tuttle said. "The first cut yielded ninety-seven, 1000-pound round bales of hay. This was about twice the yield of other area farms."

The fields underwent a second cut last summer. Rather than following the habit of the local farmers of cutting down to the soil, Tuttle left about 4 inches of grass on the fields and put down another round of the AGGRAND fertilizers.

He has not had to re-seed the land and the weeds have not returned.

The new growing season is underway and Tuttle has once again fertilized with the AGGRAND fertilizers.

Water isn't a problem this year, he said.

"It has been a wet winter and the land is saturated, the ponds are full."

He expects an early cut at the end of May this year. In fact, he's predicting a third cut for the season.

"I think the AGGRAND is really going to take off and show this year and going into next year," he said. "It's a matter of being patient. Because of what we've done, I'm anticipating about a 50 percent increase in production."

He also expects it won't be long before others in the community are looking to buy AGGRAND products.

"The healthy grass growing on our property has not grown unnoticed." Tuttle said. "This is a close community, and people share information to help each other out. Our pastures are going to be a showcase. People talk and people look. People are watching."

We are looking forward to a bright green future with AGGRAND.

Organic Fertilizers Help Maintain Natural Balance

Traditional fertilization practices have certainly caused surface and groundwater pollution, but banning the application of certain nutrients is not the answer.

The application of both nitrogen and phosphorus can be problematic. Chemical fertilizers that are highly concentrated cause water pollution even when they are applied at the recommended rates when followed too soon by heavy rain or too much irrigation.

The answer to this dilemma is to start using more sustainable practices and natural products, such as AGGRAND fertilizers. The recycling of nutrients through the return of grass clippings (using a mulching mower) stimulates soil biological activity and supplies at least two pounds of nitrogen per 1,000 square feet per year without causing any pollution. The application of low levels of AGGRAND fertilizers that contain fish, kelp and humates, plus adding corn gluten meal, stimulates the proliferation of microbes and earthworms, which readily fix these forms of nutrients before they ever get into lakes, rivers or streams. As the creatures in the soil multiply, they excrete nutrients and die or are eaten and digested and excreted by other organisms, which releases nutrients slowly as plants need them.

An actual comparison of two types of fertilizer, AGGRAND 4-3-3 and one that is chemical, illustrates the difference. One homeowner applies 30-5-10 fertilizer to his of her lawn at 20 pounds per 5,000 square feet and a neighbor applies one quart of AGGRAND 4-3-3 (2.3 pounds) of fish-kelp humate fertilizer per 5,000 square feet. The natural fertilizer puts .0184 pound of nitrogen and .013 pound of phosphate per 1,000 square feet into the soil. The naturally fertilized lawn is more drought and pest resistant and uses less water so it needs less frequent irrigation. The AGGRAND fertilizer stimulates biological activity, which creates stable soil aggregates enabling the roots to go deeper and become better developed, keeping nutrients in the root zone.

The chemical fertilizer puts 1.2 pounds of nitrogen and .2 pound of phosphate per 1,000 square feet into the soil (65 times more nitrogen and 15 times more phosphate than the natural fertilizer). The chemically fertilized lawn and/or pasture is water hungry and needs constant irrigation because the grass relies on the chemical to supply the nutrients. The chemical toxifies the soil, inhibiting biological activity, which results in compacted soil and an unhealthy root environment. Most of the nutrients are free to flow over the compacted surface into the surface water or past the restricted root zone into the ground water. Research shows that up to 96 percent of high analysis chemical fertilizers are not taken up by plants.

Fertilization is not inherently bad, but the type and amount of fertilization is the key to producing healthy lawns and pastures and eliminating water pollution.

Remember, nitrogen and phosphate are present in all ecosystems, but nature knows how to hold them and make them readily available when they are needed.

AGGRAND Natural Organic Liquid Fertilizer Foliar Application Helps Fortify Plant Health

While plants generally take up nutrients through their roots, this method cannot always meet all of their nutrient demands. If soil pH is higher (alkaline) or lower (acidic) than the optimum range for plant growth, essential nutrients become unavailable. Zinc, for example, is 'locked up' or unavailable when soil pH exceeds 7.5.

Foliar feeding is an efficient way of providing nutrients during periods of peak nutrient demand, in conditions where soil pH creates a nutrient deficiency and during periods of envi ronmental stress. A foliar supplement is the quickest way to correct these deficiencies without sacrificing performance. Applying two or three foliar supplements also reduces the amount of fertilizer needed for preplant, plant and transplant applications.

Foliar application methods:

1. Calendar-based approach: Feeding begins on a certain date and continues at set intervals throughout the growing season or,

2. The plant's developmental stages (i.e. bud formation, first bloom, fruit set, etc.) are your cue for application.

When AGGRAND 4-3-3 and 0-0-8 fertilizers are applied before drought, frost, insect attack, or the onset of disease-susceptible stages, the effects of stress will be reduced or eliminated.

Apply these two fertilizers every three to four weeks at a one to four percent dilution rate (1/4 - 5 oz. per gallon of water) for foliar applications. Use higher concentrations on heavy feeders or low fertility soils. Do not exceed four percent dilution or foliage could be damaged. On sandy soils reduce the rate by 1/4 to 1/3 and apply every two to three weeks instead.

To increase spray adhesion on the leaf surface, add a 'spreader-sticker' to the spray tank. A non-toxic biodegradable vegetable oil based product is recommended, usually at about two to three oz. per gallon or as directed.

Weeds Help You Diagnose Soil Problems

AGGRAND Natural Fertilizer 4-3-3 encourages microbial activity and speeds up decomposition and nutrient availability.

Understanding why a particular weed is growing in a garden or field can help a grower figure out how to control it. Weeds will often contain high amounts of the mineral(s) that the topsoil is lacking, and they can be the key to isolating a particular soil problem. For example, the presence of certain weeds can indicate soil compaction, low fertility levels, excess soil acidity or alkalinity, or the absence of certain key nutrients. Many of these soil problems are the result of the use and overuse of agricultural chemicals. These toxins, for that is what they are, gradually deplete the soil of its biological life, slowing decomposition, reducing nutrient availability, and increasing soil compaction. Earth-worms are soon discouraged and the life seeps slowly from the soil. Weeds are nature's way of helping to rebuild damaged soil and showing the observant grower just how to do it. Besides being good indicators, deep-rooted weeds can bring scarce minerals back up to the surface and make them available to crops via decomposition. This is simply a continuous, natural soil-balancing process that increases the level of organic matter via microbial activity. Gardeners and farmers have adapted to this process by delegating certain weeds, called green manures or cover crops, and using natural fertilizers to return nutrients and organic matter to the soil, encourage increased microbial activity and root growth, and attract a healthy earthworm population.

Make conditions less favorable for a variety of weeds by using AGGRAND Natural Fertilizer 4-3-3 to encourage microbial activity and speed up decomposition and nutrient availability. Weed pressures can often be reduced by balancing the phosphorus (P) to potassium (K) ratio to about 2:1. Use equal amounts of AGGRAND Natural Liquid Bonemeal 0-12-0 and AGGRAND Natural Kelp and Sulfate of Potash (about 2 oz each/gallon of water per 25 square feet) for soil balancing. A soil test is recommended to establish a starting point.

For more information about specific garden-fertilizer applications, consult the AGGRAND Gardening Guide (G-1292).

AGGRAND Natural Liquid Lime: pH and Calcium Deficiency

Two of the questions I am asked most often about AGGRAND Natural Liquid Lime (NLL) are:

1. "My soil lab says I need to put on 2 tons of limestone per acre. How much AGGRAND Natural Liquid Lime does it take to equal that much lime?"

2. "How much AGGRAND Natural Liquid Lime do I need to raise the pH of my soil?"

Neal Kinsey, the author of Hands-On Agronomy, puts it this way, "I never look at pH to determine when to lime or what kind of lime to use. I look at the deficiencies in the soil."

If you were to try to replace two tons of limestone with AGGRAND Natural Liquid Lime, it would cost more than $19,000 per acre. That's not what Liquid Lime is for. It is a calcium supplement, intended to temporarily boost calcium levels in the root
zone.

A typical recommendation for AGGRAND Natural Liquid Lime is 2 gallons per acre per application, which places about 6 pounds of limestone in the root zone immediately, at a Dealer cost of about $30 per acre. Since bagged or solid limestone needs to be tilled under to be effective, a lot less effort is required to get that calcium to the crop, when AGGRAND Natural Liquid Lime is used.

Now, you may think the amount of lime in 2 gallons of Natural Liquid Lime doesn't amount to a whole lot. A 6-pound piece of limestone doesn't cover a very large area. But, if you grind it into a powder, 6 pounds of powdered lime will kick up a dust storm that could hide a tractor. In short, limestone fine enough to go through a 325-mesh screen will go a long way.

So, naturally, we don't recommend AGGRAND Liquid Lime for pH adjustment and we never have. One thing low pH most often indicates, though, is a calcium deficiency, and ultimately, it's the deficiency that we're addressing directly, not the soil pH.

When soil is described as nutrient 'deficient,' it means there simply isn't enough in the soil to promote optimal plant growth. When we use AGGRAND Natural Liquid Lime, we are actually responding to the calcium deficiency first and foremost, and adding enough calcium for the plant or crop to maintain satisfactory growth.

Kinsey also talks about the relationship between the grind or fineness of a particular limestone, and the speed with which it breaks down in the soil and becomes plant available. His benchmark is: If 60 percent of the lime will go through a 100-mesh (150 micron) screen, then, when applied in the fall, a third of it will be available next spring and for the following two years. But, what you get with AGGRAND Natural Liquid Lime is 100 percent of the lime passing through a 325-mesh (44 micron) screen, which allows 100 percent of it to influence the soil and plant growth immediately. AGGRAND Natural Liquid Lime can be applied during the growing season for quick soil and foliar adjustments.

AGGRAND Natural Liquid Lime is primarily a source of supplemental calcium that can be applied on a regular basis (after cutting hay or grass, for example) to maintain optimal calcium levels in the plant root zone.

AGGRAND Natural Kelp and Sulfate of Potash: 'Health Food for Plants'

Every now and then here at AGGRAND, we look at ourselves and ask: Why aren't we selling more Natural Kelp and Sulfate of Potash 0-0-8 (NKP)?

This product is a highly concentrated health food for plants, which makes it a no-brainer for savvy AGGRAND users. So, here's some information we hope will make it another one of the must-have products in your AGGRAND stable.

AGGRAND developed Natural Kelp and Sulfate of Potash as a primarily potassium- and sulfur-based product for foliar applications and potassium supplementation.

Powerful Ingredients for Plants
